Does anyone really know what they want to be when entering college? I can remember a few that do, most that don't, and some that just let their major pick them.
Picking what to study is a lot, but it’s also a chance to figure out who you are. There’s pressure from family, friends, and society about what to do. Finding something that jives with your passions makes for a way more fulfilling college experience AND career. Here’s some ideas on how to go about it:
**1. Think About What You Love** Start by thinking about what gets you excited. What do you enjoy doing? Keep a journal to jot down your thoughts, and look for common themes that could help you choose a major.
**2. Explore Different Options** Don’t be afraid to check out different fields before settling on a major. Join clubs, attend workshops, or shadow someone in the field. You never know what might spark your curiosity. And a "HECK NO, I'm NOT doing that" is still a cue in the right direction.
**3. Know Your Strengths** Consider what you’re good at. Choosing a major that lines up with your skills can lead to more success and satisfaction. Utilize career assessments or chat with academic advisors for some guidance.
**4. Think About Career Aspirations** While following your passions is important, think about how your major fits into your future goals. Research possible career paths and what the job market looks like to help you decide.
**5. Be Open to Change** Your major doesn’t have to define your entire career. Many people end up in jobs unrelated to what they studied. Stay open to switching things up as you learn and grow.
Trust yourself, enjoy the process, and remember that it’s totally okay to change your mind. No matter what, dream big and don't let anything or anyone hold you back from a future adventure!
